Since 2017, 32-year-old Carralero has engaged in a comprehensive study of the art from XIII to XV centuries, reflecting the body of work of masters such as Fra Angelico, Giotto and Piero della Francesca. The symbolism of iconographic elements paired with the artist’s strong concern for architecture and architectural elements of paintings from these periods, inspirit her to evolve own idiosyncratic sceneries. Her work is characterised not only by Byzantine and Gothic icons, but also by the concept of the Russian icon.

Aiming to create a scenography without any recognizable context, Carralero intends to explore the transcendence of sacred places and their emblematic representation at times, where art was more than a means of self-expression, but the construction of thoughts.

The exhibition, which the artist titles „Veil“, is not a strict reference to the Holy Veil, it is the result of its various faces. The new series of works is the result of observing in the medieval paintings a method of representation capable of carrying an intricate system of symbolism, and still being able to embody geometric freedom, an intricate study of color and also denote the antagonistic relationship between beautiful forms and their distortions.

Carralero’s work has been widely exhibited across Cuba and has been shown twice at the Havana Biennial and at the Servando Gallery amongst others. The artist has participated in group shows in the United States (Averies Gallery, Philadelphia, Lois Lambert Gallery, Santa Monica), in Europe (Galerie Mai 36, Zurich) and has had a solo exhibition at BALTSprojects (Zurich).

Laura Carralero was born in Holguín, Cuba in 1991. She lives and works in Spain.
