Dufourstrasse 97, 8008 Fading into Fullness
Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 11am-4pm
There are those special moments between spring and summer when the light changes, the colours become more intense and the world takes on a different rhythm. Fading into Fullness is dedicated to this seasonal and emotional transition through the medium of contemporary photography. The exhibition brings together thirteen international artists whose over 30 works deal with perception, time, change and transience - inspired by Japanese aesthetics such as wabi-sabi and mono no aware.
At the centre is an interest in subtle transformations: How light, texture and form change with the changing seasons - and how these shifts are also reflected in ourselves. The works explore states of expectation and pause: moments in which perception is sharpened and inner states become visible.
The delicate compositions of Rinko Kawauchi, the luminous cherry blossoms of Risaku Suzuki and the meditative seascapes of Syoin Kajii offer visual studies of natural transience. Lieko Shiga and Stephen Gill explore memory, place and the traces of experience, while artists such as Erik Madigan Heck, Emma Summerton and John Yuyi work with the body, presence and performance, constructing images that reflect both emotional and aesthetic aspects. Yoshinori Mizutani focuses on reflections and plays of light that translate the fleeting and abstract nature of the moment into poetic visual worlds.
From Jung Lee's luminous neon sculptures to the analogue interventions of Linus Bill and the quiet monumentality of Anthony Friedkin's surf images, Fading into Fullness brings together photographic practices that are formally distinct yet conceptually aligned. It is an exhibition about border areas - between image and memory, control and chance, nature and figure, seeing and feeling.
In a time that is often characterised by acceleration and abundance, Fading into Fullness invites us to devote ourselves to stillness and transition - the richness of a state that is only just beginning to unfold.
