Artists: Serge Izquierdo - Vincent Bousserez

Artists Vincent Bousserez and Serge Izquierdo present the exhibition Territoires invisibles. Both working on the perception of time and space, they bring their approaches into dialogue by transcending the photographic medium: one creates works enhanced with paint, the other draws to augment his photographic prints.

In his series Almost Nothing, Vincent Bousserez questions the way the human being shapes and constrains nature, as though he occupied the summit of an invisible hierarchy. Yet this position is illusory: Man only passes through the landscapes he claims to master, leaving nothing behind but traces. Almost Nothing is an exploration of this fantasized domination and its fragility. In a precise pictorial gesture, the artist blends photographic prints, hyperrealistic drawings and lithographs. These different techniques overlap and converse with one another, mirroring the very perceptions they seek to unsettle.

Serge Izquierdo, for his part, situates himself “on the threshold” of an unknown world whose existence we sense. Echoing the notion of dark matter, thought to make up most of our universe, his series Bright Matter explores the emergence of a sensitive visual matter and creates cosmic landscapes in vibrant colors, using mixed techniques: enlargements, recompositions, pictorial interventions. Like Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Reveries of the Solitary Walker, his works are a journey, a crossing.

What unites these two artists is a shared conviction: a work cannot be grasped in a single glance, it requires time, both in its composition and in its reading. Vincent Bousserez works within the long term, reworking his photographic prints in black chalk and ballpoint pen with hyperrealistic precision. Serge Izquierdo accumulates, transforms, recycles, convinced that every image carries within it the seeds of an image yet unknown.

Vincent Bousserez, was born in 1973 in Paris and grew up in the orbit of painting, that of his godfather, the painter Michel Bousserez. Trained as an artistic director, he never abandoned the visual arts and began photography in Morocco in 1996. In 2007, his series Plastic Life, human figurines staged within everyday life, brought him to public attention. Since then, his work has blended photography and drawing to inhabit a space in between: neither image nor painting, but a dialogue between two languages that illuminate each other without merging.

Serge Izquierdo was born in 1970 in Paris. Trained at the visual arts workshops of Ivry-sur-Seine, he abandoned sharpness in favor of blur as early as 1992. He describes his work as an archeology of the invisible: he extracts from reality fragments imperceptible to the naked eye and brings forth entire territories from them: organic cartographies, cosmic landscapes, vibrations of matter. Photography, painting and digital manipulation merge into a single exploration: revealing what hides behind the surface of the visible. From fragment to immensity, from matter to image.
