Taste Contemporary presents Physis, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of German artist Ernst Gamperl and Japanese artist Shunshun.
Physis, in ancient Greek, refers to ‘nature’ and ‘one’s inherent being.’ Not simply nature as scenery and landscape, but as a source of growth. A vital, generative life force that moves and continues to bring things into being.
Internationally recognised for his sculptural work, and renowned for his extraordinary expertise in working with wood, Ernst Gamperl recently marked forty years of studio practice with a major retrospective – The Tree of Life – that opened at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, before travelling to the Museum für Kunst & Gewerbe, Hamburg. This exhibition places the work of this acclaimed artist in dialogue with the delicate and contemplative line drawings created by Shunshun, a young artist whose emerging practice offers a fresh and thoughtful perspective. After working in architectural design for some years, Shunshun changed his focus to drawing; exploring spatial depth and quiet emotional resonance through meticulously layered lines.
Together, the work of both artists opens a conversation across generations, material, form and the true meaning of nature.
