Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) by Garde presents Dissolving Horizons: A New Figure-Ground Proposition, a solo exhibition by the esteemed Japanese contemporary artist Mitsumasa Kadota. Coinciding with Frieze Week—a moment when the global art world’s attention converges on New York—this ambitious exhibition positions Kadota's practice as a vital continuation of American Abstract Expressionism, while simultaneously redefining its underlying Eastern spirituality within the broader context of global art history.
The exhibition's central theme—a new proposition regarding the figure-ground relationship—serves both as a structural exploration of the two-dimensional picture plane and as a manifestation of the unique polytheistic worldview that informs Kadota's work. In the past, American masters such as Helen Frankenthaler and Barnett Newman challenged and dismantled the boundaries between background (ground) and subject (figure). Engaging with this historical precedent, Kadota offers a profound contemporary response rooted in a polytheistic, non-dualistic perspective, which recognizes boundless divinity in all things.
In contrast to the sharp dichotomy between the "self" and the "world" often prevalent in monotheistic cultures (and therefore the artwork produced in those cultures), Kadota's canvases, rather, are characterized by an intense friction of dynamic brushwork and vibrant color. Upon his surfaces, the boundary between spatial depth and the physical act of painting constantly wavers and dissolves. Through this process, Kadota inherits the pure potential of flatness achieved by the Abstract Expressionists, while sublimating the energy of Eastern philosophy—where Self and Other seamlessly merge—into the very structural foundation of the painting itself.
In the New York art world, a definitive criterion for evaluating an artist is their capacity to deeply comprehend art historical trajectories and reinvent them through their own unique cultural identity. By directly confronting the Western canonical lineage of American Abstract Expressionism and proposing the next horizon for two-dimensional abstraction through a polytheistic lens, this exhibition offers an invaluable opportunity to firmly establish the international significance of Mitsumasa Kadota.
