Artist: Gülbin Ünlü

As Uranus completes its transit through Gemini in April, marking the end of an eight-year cycle of upheaval and the beginning of new developments, Munich-based artist Gülbin Ünlü is preparing for her Berlin debut at the Barbara Thumm Gallery. Currently a fellow at the Villa Romana in Florence, the artist, who has Turkish roots, is coming to the German Capital of Culture to present a carefully curated dialogue between her institutional exhibition history and her latest experimental approaches. Her title creates a cognitive space for self-discovery; almost an ice-breaking motto for self-introduction – a clever play on words, considering the meaning of her surname in Turkish: “famous, well-known, respected…”

Ünlüs’s complex and unique practice is characterised by a distinctive ‘mash-up’ philosophy: a seamless dialogue between painting, drawing, photography and sound. Rather than committing to a single medium, she employs a multi-layered hybrid technique that combines printmaking and painting into fragmented dimensions and structures.
