165 Worth Avenue, 33480 Gilles Gorriti: The Quintessential Modernist
Mon-Sat 10am-6pm
Artist: Gilles Gorriti
Gilles Gorriti (1939–2018) emerged as a distinctive voice in modern painting, shaped by a rich artistic heritage. The son of the celebrated painter Paul Aïzpiri, he developed an early connection to the arts and, at just seventeen, held his first solo exhibition at Galerie Morval, marking the beginning of his presence in the Paris art world. He later joined the esteemed Salon d’Automne, aligning himself with a lineage of modern French painting.
This exhibition focuses primarily on Gorriti’s still lifes and interior scenes, which reveal a particularly intimate and contemplative dimension of his work. Floral arrangements, Japanese fans, and studio compositions are rendered with luminous color, balance, and quiet sensitivity. In these paintings, Gorriti transforms everyday subjects into meditations on light, harmony, and atmosphere. Bouquets appear with a freshness and vitality that suggest immediacy rather than precision, while the graceful forms and decorative patterns of Japanese fans allow for a subtle exploration of movement, rhythm, and compositional balance.
A select group of city views of Paris, New York, and Venice offers a lyrical counterpoint to these quieter works. Whether depicting animated boulevards, café terraces, or atmospheric corners of the city, Gorriti captures each setting with a fluid sensitivity to light and mood, bringing the same refinement and pictorial elegance found in his interiors.
Together, these works reflect an artist deeply attuned to the poetry of everyday life. Whether painting the quiet resonance of the studio or the enduring allure of the city, Gorriti’s work is distinguished by its lyrical brushwork, luminous palette, and refined sensitivity to color, light, and form.
