Tintype

Established: 2010

Tintype opened in 2010 and currently represents twelve artists from the UK, Germany, Romania, Hong Kong and Canada. The gallery program is informed and led by artists’ practices. The orientation of the gallery is framed around an investigation of making, materials, and process.

Tintype presents seven or eight exhibitions a year, alongside related artist-led events, talks and performances. Initiatives that began as an experiment have become part of Tintype’s ongoing program. Once a year an artist is offered the gallery as a project space leading to a subsequent show. Tintype has developed the Essex Road project, an annual commission for eight moving-image artists to make short films that are a response to the mile-long street on which the gallery is based. The films are back-projected into the gallery window so it becomes a public screen. In August, when the gallery is closed, an artist is invited to use the gallery’s large glass window to install a work.
