Installation Views

Passionate about cinema and its icons, the artist has created a series of paintings entitled Casting. Continuing her technical research, Nina Childress uses iridescent pigments and Colorstream to create scenes and portraits in motion that question the nature of the gaze and the position of the viewer. The viewer becomes an actor in their perception of the image, with colours subtly varying as they move in front of the canvas. Cinematic framing, off-screen effects and striking expressions evoke the world of the big screen.

Bourbon, kitten, chin

My sister is small and light, and very pretty. She has no hips and perfect breasts. She always looks as if her favourite kitten has just been run over.

*

R. despised Jack because of his chin. She had disliked it from the moment she first saw it, back in high school, when the boy had been cloaked in gloom and a self-important air – after all, he was an artist and very sensitive.

*

Readers learned that M.’s therapy – prescribed by the most expensive and good-looking doctor in Los Angeles for anxiety and insomnia – consisted of repeated applications of the doctor’s expertise to the actress’s naked body while she lay face down.

*

As the sun rose, it shone on my existential angst and my eyeliner, which, although perfectly applied, had smeared across my cheeks in the heat of aborted passion, forming thick blue veins.
I was a tortured teenage virgin.

*

K. was obsessed with her figure and curves. When in public, she would hide the food on her plate under garnishes, and once back home, she would make herself vomit after nearly every meal. She died of a heart attack while preparing breakfast for her dear parents.

*

L. arrived in Hollywood, dressed in the chicest black and adorned with emeralds and diamonds. In Paris, a young man had just taken his own life because of her by swallowing two packets of Gardenal with bourbon. Her grief, however, extended no further than her wardrobe.

*

F. wandered around in a little girl’s birthday dress with frayed hems and ripped armholes that had been widened to fit her. The waistline sat just below her chest. Her bleached-blonde hair was neither charming nor silky, but wild and tangled, and mascara ran beneath her eyes. She had crossed the line from ‘sexy young waif who has just fallen out of bed’ to ‘unpredictable, dangerous, unstable girl’.
