Laurence Edwards’ work entwines nature and humanity with an acute awareness of being present in time. For him this is both an act of personal responsibility, as well as submission to the flow of nature – the progress of seasons or the journey of a river. This duality is present in many of his sculptures, and in this new series of works Edwards has chosen to develop a group of iconic motifs, re-examining their conceptual underpinnings and evaluating his own motives and beliefs.

The material of bronze is itself an integral part of the conceptual side of his art. ‘I was seduced by the process and the foundry,’ he explains. It is the material traditionally understood as the ‘art metal’, used by generations of artists over centuries – endlessly malleable, able to be smelted and recreated into almost any form and embodying the idea of entropy that fascinated Edwards.

Edwards is one of a few artists who cast their own work, bringing the age-old craft into his creative process, developed through formal training in the UK and India, as well as his own relentless experimentation. His sculptures can be seen as vessels to encourage consideration of our own humanity and what it means to exist in partnership with the world we inhabit.
