This season, Sotheby’s is honored to entrust the curation of its Important Design auction to Pierre Hardy.
With over 200 lots combining Art Deco, post-war design, and contemporary creations, the sale establishes a lively dialogue between the masters of the past and the voices of the present.
The sale will open with a chapter celebrating the centenary of the Paris 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, presented by the Anne-Sophie Duval gallery and Liaigre. This cross-selection of some fifty creations reveals the close links between the great figures of Art Deco, such as Paul Iribe, Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, and Josef Csaky, and the creations of Christian Liaigre.
The sale will continue with a journey through design from the 20th century to the present day, celebrating the visionary power of the period's great designers. From Pierre Chareau to Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Legrain to T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Jean Prouvé to Paavo Tynell, Gio Ponti to Alexandre Noll, but also the Bouroullec brothers, Marc Newson, Pierre Charpin, and Shiro Kuramata, the sale reveals several major creations in the history of design, some of which are being offered at auction for the first time. More than 70 designers are represented, including Paul Dupré-Lafon, Armand Petersen, Georges Jouve, Line Vautrin, Eugène Printz, Hans Wegner, Vera Szekely, Pierre Paulin, Claude de Muzac, François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne, Rick Owens, and Satoshi Itasaka, represented here with his poetic Balloon bench.
Contemporary design will also be in the spotlight with a section dedicated to the work of Richard Peduzzi. Through a selection of furniture, rugs, and lighting, the sale showcases the unique artistic vision of this internationally renowned scenographer, painter, and designer.
