62 Old Nichol Street, E2 7HP Eduardo Paolozzi: The Bunuel Suite & Luciano Bonomi: Requiem & other collages 2012-2017
Wed-sat 12-6pm
Artist: Eduardo Paolozzi
Benjamin Rhodes Arts presents the Bunuel Suite of screenprints by Eduardo Paolozzi only recently released from storage including unseen monochrome examples and some hand-coloured by the artist.
Their origin is Paolozzi’s 1996 Jason & Rhodes show 'Obscure Objects of Desire' and his collaboration with master printmaker Kip Gresham. This coincided with his participation in Hayward Gallery's 'Spellbound: Art and Film' (curated by Ian Christie and Philip Dodd) also celebrating his debt to great cinema. Gillian Jason and Benjamin Rhodes had a productive and exciting working relationship with this brilliant sculptor / printmaker / polymath, and this was the first of two exhibitions to happen during the 1990’s.
We salute the extraordinary artistic and cultural legacy of Eduardo Paolozzi and we salute the brilliant gallerist career of Gillian Jason.
Luciano Bonomi provides a different homage in his Requiem, marking his chosen icons of our culture: comedia characters / writers / composers / an activist hero and a screen goddess - with these playful but profound collages – others from separate series also feature here.
Bonomi has had a long exhibiting role with Art First in England (we thank Clare Cooper for her assistance). His artistic studies took place at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, where Fausto Melotti was an influence, especially in relation to his sculptures in brass and wire…… here is Entry to Jerusalem for example. He now resides in Latina outside Rome where a retrospective exhibition took place in 2020.
