Berlinde De Bruyckere

Born: 1964, Ghent, Belgium

Berlinde De Bruyckere’s sculpture and installation work is influenced by the Flemish Renaissance, European Old Masters, and iconography from Christianity, mythology, and cultural lore. Her haunting and anthropomorphic works are created with wax, animal skins, hair, textile, metal, and wood - “I want to show how helpless a body can be, which is nothing you have to be afraid of—it can be something beautiful”.
