ACA Galleries presents Style Continuation, featuring New York city-centric paintings, photos and prints. This multimedia show presents artists who defined New York style writing alongside photographers who documented their work and the city around them. Starting with pieces from the 1980s and 1990s the exhibition brings together rarely exhibited works from several private collections as well as under recognized photographers who recorded these exceptional, ephemeral moments.
The 1980s breathed a fresh air of optimism over the backdrop of 1970s recession era New York. These conditions created spaces where art produced in the streets merged with galleries, giving rise to a whole new generation of artists who changed the face of art forever. No longer the province of the few, the artworld was broken open for a new, inclusive generation to define. This exhibition demonstrates the enduring influence of these artists and the ways their art continues to inform culture today.
Featured artists include: Daze, Dondi, Ero, Fab Five Freddy, Richard Hambleton, Greg Lamarche, Kenny Scharf, Richard Sandler, Stay High 149 and Tracy 168, among others.
