Artist: Hyun-Sook Song
Hyun-Sook Song’s paintings bear the imprint of her east-to-west journey. The forms she delineates with only a few sweeping brushstrokes carry the material and muscle memories of the cyclical agriculture sustaining life in the South Korean mountain village where she was born. The figurative elements are not legible scenes so much as metonymic symbols, which capsule all that is unmoored in the transition from Eastern agrarian life to the post-industrial West. Four decades into her practice, Song continues to find new variation within a small, recurring vocabulary. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers present new paintings, in conversation with earlier works, by Song at the London gallery, marking the artist’s first exhibition in the UK. Each work rewards close looking, and reveals more still when read against the slow evolution of the œuvre it belongs to. The familiar, here, is renewed without end.
