Artist: Masao Nakahara

For AAW Althuis Hofland Fine Arts presents Playground, a solo exhibition dedicated to the work of Japanese artist Masao Nakahara (b. 1956). Working across painting, drawing and sculpture since the late 1970s, Nakahara has developed a distinctive visual language — a soft surrealist approach that merges childhood memory with everyday, present-day imagery into dreamlike, quietly unsettling scenes.

The exhibition takes its title from a small, toy-like sculpture depicting a figure suspended mid-motion on a horizontal playground bar — a recurring motif in Nakahara’s work, where sites of childhood play become stages for larger reflections on memory, myth, and the passage of time.

Playground simultaneously marks the inaugural exhibition at the gallery’s new space at Het Singel. Here AHFA will continue to present carefully curated yet intimate exhibitions at the intersection of historic architecture and art.
