Lumière Liquide means ‘liquid light’. The title draws on the particular brightness of Saint-Tropez, whose Mediterranean light has attracted generations of artists and became inseparable from the development of modern painting. Reflected from the sea, the light feels warm and soft, spreading across the landscape and changing the appearance of color throughout the day. Its movement gives surfaces a fluid quality and makes distance appear to expand or contract from one hour to the next. The exhibition takes this shifting Mediterranean light as its point of departure.

The exhibition in our gallery in Saint-Tropez, brings together sixteen artists whose works explore transformation through material process and altered perception. Light passes through glass and multiplies in mirror. It catches on relief and recedes within blurred photographs. Pigment records its movement across canvas, while Japanese paper gathers shadow within its folds. Throughout the exhibition, light changes the encounter with each work and draws attention to the physical properties of its materials.

Marina Abramović brings the body into the exhibition through photography and the projection of psychic energy. Donna Huanca carries bodily images into painted surfaces where skin merges with terrain. In the paintings of Nada Baraka, dreamlike spaces gather around unstable forms, whereas Kathryn MacNaughton allows poured pigment to determine the movement of the image. Michèle Buhofer shifts the scale of landscape through aerial photography, and Eva Schlegel uses blur to place recognition at the edge of visibility. Brigitte Kowanz works with neon and mirror so that light extends through reflection. Claudine Drai shapes Japanese paper into delicate reliefs that gather shadow across their surfaces. Glass runs through the sculptures of Tony Cragg, Marya Kazoun, Ai Weiwei and Erwin Wurm, each using the material toward a different end, from abstract form to hybrid creatures and transformed objects. Erin Vincent reorganizes discarded material through repetition, giving it renewed physical intensity. Wolfgang Becksteiner uses four precisely placed stelae to define the open space between them.Together, these works give Lumière Liquide its sense of movement, with light revealing how quickly an image or material can enter another state.
