Artist: Elizabeth Maw
An inaugural display of works by emerging artist Elizabeth Maw.
Maw’s sculpture investigates line as a physical object, rather than a mere mark or representation. Experimentation is central to her practice, with each piece emerging through a process of material-led enquiry rather than a predetermined outcome. Working between two and three-dimensions, she is interested in blurring the boundaries between drawing and sculpture, with a particular focus on how a line can interrupt or occupy space — not just describe it. Maw comments, “In an image-saturated world, I am drawn to the quiet power of reduction — to what happens when we focus on the minimal and the in-between.”
Through constructed forms, Maw creates lines that float, intersect, and cast shadows, allowing drawing to occupy space as a material presence. Welding has transformed Maw’s approach to sculpture. Rather than treating it as a means of joining materials, she uses it as a way of drawing in space. Welded structures enable Maw to construct and extend lines, creating balances, tensions, and volumes that explore openness, weight, containment, and absence. The welded seam itself remains visible as a record of process, gesture, and the passage of time.
