David Hockney dies aged 88

David Hockney, one of the most prolific and popular artists of his generation, has died aged 88.

The British-born artist’s debut exhibition - which sold out - was in 1963 and he retained his position as one of the leading figures in the art world throughout his career.

Famously, his “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)” sold in 2018 at auction for £70 million, the world record price for a work by a living artist at the time.

Continuing to work right to the end, an exhibition of new paintings “David Hockney: A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting” is on view at the Serpentine Gallery in London until August, and next month Gray in Chicago opens “David Hockney: The Moon Room”.

He is survived by his long-time partner Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima.
