One of the most prolific and popular artists of his generation, Hockney was in a lot of ways a very traditional painter who nonetheless embraced technology and since the 1970s remained both widely loved and critically admired. His debut exhibition in 1963 sold out and he retained his position as one of the leading figures in the art world throughout his career. Famously, his “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)” sold in 2018 at auction for £70 million, the world record price for a work by a living artist at the time.
