Gallery Hyundai presents We placed the photograph taken yesterday in plain sight, a solo exhibition of Yang Jung Uk, an artist who unravels the scenery of everyday life through his own sculptural language. In his first solo exhibition at the gallery, Yang presents installations that depict the ordinary yet subtle moments that people face in relationships.

The 1st, 2nd floors consist of a new body of works, which focuses on the act and experience of taking a ‘group photo’ to commemorate a specific day or event. Yang animates various poses, situations and atmosphere, and individual stories in the context of a ‘group photo’ through the use of multiple objects. Exhibited on the 2nd floor, Friends Who No Longer Meet series recreates the disconnected relationships through the imagery of remaining memories. Scenery of Dialogue series, portraying the interaction and mediation between two people occupy the basement floor. The artist uncovers familiar experiences and the ordinary relationships found within by providing a strange and unusual sensation in an entangled form of various stories.

Yang reconstructs the mundane aspects of life as a narrative through close observation. This, which takes an abstract form in the mind of the artist, is realized as a concrete structure using various objects, wood, and thread accompanied by sound, light, or movement. Renowned for his distinctively lyrical and synesthetic style, Yang was featured in Class of 2011, a group exhibition at Gallery Hyundai dedicated to emerging artists, as well as Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, a three-person exhibition comprised of artists with recognized talent in 2016.

Yang Jung Uk has exhibited extensively, showing solo exhibitions at Doosan Gallery (New York, 2015), OCI Museum (Seoul, 2015), Domaine de Kerguehennec (France, 2017) as well as participating in group shows at Sungkok Art Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Nam June Paik Art Center, and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. His works are in the collections at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
