Werner Reiterer’s fourth solo exhibition at Galerie Krinzinger is showing recent works of his series Drawn Exhibitions.
He started the series in the 90s – illustrating his sculptural works and installations as well as creating drawings that have no reference to an existing work, but are more of a note of works that haven’t been realized respectively are not viable in the three dimensional. The repetitive format (70 x 50 cm) and also the formal consequence are amplifying the repetitive character of the series, emphasizing the content.
Drawing is central to Reiterer’s art and allows the visualization of ideas that can be both feasible and impossible to realize in the physical world. Utilizing 19 different grades of graphite pencils, and drawing consistently in a style that is both simple and literal, he reveals an understanding of the medium both as a means to prepare fort the making of sculptures and as a medium that has its own innate and complex possibilities. Drawing is a medium that allows the artist to reorganize relationships between objects and ideas in unexpected ways and in The Drawn Exhibition series Reiterers exploits this potential, making ironic leaps of imagination that undermines our expectations and raise questions about the way we see and understand the world. Akin to a sophisticated form of note-taking, works in The Drawn Exhibition series have a humorous and absurd quality all their own while together they form an ongoing catalogue oft he artist’s limitless reflections upon reality.
