This July, S|2 London presents an exhibition of works focusing on the 1970s period by Japanese artist Tsuyoshi Maekawa in Gallery One.

Tsuyoshi Maekawa

Born in 1936 in Osaka, Tsyuoshi Maekawa became a member of the Gutai Art Association in 1962, but joining this now widely recognised artist group was merely the beginning in many ways.

The exhibition at S│2 and accompanying publication is focused primarily on the artist’s post-Gutai practice, with works dating from as early as 1969 through until 1978. The Gutai Group dissolved in 1972 following the passing of its founder Jiro Yoshihara and for many of its members it symbolised the end of an era, but it also paved the way for many of its members to evolve and re-invent their artistic methods and processes, drawing on the fertile and experimental Gutai years as an impetus for a discovery of a new language of materialisation.
