This first solo exhibition of Terry Adkins at Lévy Gorvy explores the visual and conceptual concerns and influences that unite the many aspects of his interdisciplinary practice.
The Smooth, The Cut, and The Assembled, curated by his friend and frequent collaborator Charles Gaines, focuses on formal methods by which Adkins distilled the essence of his materials, be they found artifacts, musical instruments, or industrial materials. Mining African and African-American history for forms and figures overlooked by dominant narratives, Adkins channeled what he called the “spirit world” underlying reality with analytic acuity. This intimate presentation of Adkins’ sculptures promises to illuminate the inventive hybridity of his practice, wherein reclaimed objects and materials prompt experiences of both critical reflection and powerful emotion.

The Smooth, The Cut, and The Assembled celebrates Lévy Gorvy’s representation of the Estate of Terry Adkins, which was announced earlier this month. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated publication including an introductory text by Gaines; a scholarly essay by Michael Brenson, Senior Critic at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design; and newly commissioned poetry by Robin Coste Lewis, winner of the 2015 National Book Award for Poetry. In conjunction with the exhibition, Lévy Gorvy will host a series of cultural events that illuminate additional areas of Adkins’ artistic practice.
