The Collection of Seymour and Alyce Lazar reflects their lifetime of travel and their appreciation of the art and cultures from the Pacific to Africa and the Pre-Columbian world. Raised in California in the 1930s, Seymour became a successful entertainment lawyer to notable musicians and writers of the day. Married in 1965, Alyce enthusiastically supported the broad trajectory of Seymour’s collecting. Beginning in the mid-1960s, they filled their houses with African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian art, becoming clients of the auction houses and galleries in New York, London, Paris, Brussels and Hong Kong, and forming close relationships with key experts in these fields. Inspired by the art, food and culture of Mexico in the early 1960s, they lived six months a year in Cuernavaca from 1965 to 1971, becoming friends with the artists and literati including William Spratling, Milton Leof, and Miguel Covarrubias. In 1971, they moved to Palm Springs, California, filling their historic classic Californian Spanish revival house with the art they admired from around the world and welcoming guests to stay with them. Until the end, Seymour could be found installed with auction catalogues deciding what to bid on next – his great enthusiasm for art was never diminished.
