Sotheby’s Wine is delighted to participate in our thirteenth collaboration with Ornellaia’s exceptional Vendemmia d’Artista program, open for online bidding from September 7th and closing on the 21st of September 2023.

We are completely delighted that, for the fourth consecutive edition, the Vendemmia d’Artista Charity auction will be held online in collaboration with Sotheby’s Wine, opening up truly global access to the worldwide community of collectors and ardent followers of Ornellaia.

Proportion evokes the perfect balance between parts and the whole, this is expressed in Ornellaia 2020, a rich and full-bodied wine in which each of the four varieties grown on the Ornellaia estate, showed their singular qualities. United through balance and synergy, they provided a classic expression of Ornellaia whereby the ripeness caused by the sun pairs with an elegant focus.

The bottle designs have been created by the American artist Joseph Kosuth, who has represented the character of Ornellaia 2020 “La Proporzione” (Proportion) through the comparative tree of the Indo-European language family and Vitruvius’ quote from his masterpiece De Architectura.

VENDEMMIA D’ARTISTA

Vendemmia d’Artista celebrates the exclusive character of each Ornellaia vintage. Since the release of Ornellaia 2006, an internationally famous contemporary artist has created a work of art for the estate and a series of limited-edition labels, inspired by the character identified by the winemaker to describe the particular features of the new vintage. 111 large formats, of which 100 3-litre Double Magnums, 10 six-litre Imperials and a nine-litre Salmanazar, are sold and auctioned off to be delivered to the cellars of collectors and the proceeds are donated to charity. Since 2012, the Vendemmia d’Artista project has been extended to each case of Ornellaia (containing six 750 ml bottles) in which one bottle out of six has a special label designed by the artist.

SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM FOUNDATION | MIND’S EYE PROGRAM

Since 2009, Ornellaia has donated all the proceeds from its Vendemmia d’Artista charity auctions, generously overseen by Sotheby’s, in favour of art foundations and museums all over the world.

From 2019, the Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista project raises funds to support the innovative Mind’s Eye program of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

This program, created by the Guggenheim’s education department, helps individuals who are blind or have low vision experience art at the Guggenheim Museum through all their senses.

When all senses are invoked, possibilities expand for making imaginative impressions, emotional connections, and long-lasting memories. The appreciation of art and great wines involves all the senses, and it is this idea that has inspired Ornellaia to support the growth of this particular program.

Over the first four years of the collaboration, the donations of Ornellaia have allowed the Guggenheim to increase Mind’s Eye program’s activities, purchase necessary tools for the development of the program and to cope with the sudden need, due to the pandemic, to transform the program in presence into a virtual experience.

The Digital Mind’s Eye programs have successfully reached a growing audience, including participants from all over the world.
