This October, Sotheby’s Wine is delighted to participate in our twelfth collaboration with Ornellaia’s exceptional Vendemmia d’Artista program. Having hosted incredible events in New York, Hong Kong, London, Toronto, Basel, Los Angeles and Venice – each of which was wholly unique and exciting, in the same way that every vintage has its own distinct character – we are delighted that, for the third consecutive year, the Vendemmia d’Artista Charity auction will be held online, opening up truly global access to the worldwide community of collectors and ardent followers of Ornellaia.

Vendemmia d’Artista celebrates the unique character of each Ornellaia vintage. Since the release of Ornellaia 2006, an internationally famous contemporary artist has created a series of unique works of art for the estate, inspired by the character identified by the winemaker to encapsulate the particular features of the new vintage. A very limited number of just 111 large formats, of which 100 3-litre Double Magnums, just 10 six-litre Imperials and a single nine-litre Salmanazar, are offered every year as unique works of art, sought after worldwide by collectors of both sculpture and wine.

Since 2019 the auction has raised funds to support the Mind’s Eye program of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, an innovative scheme that helps bring the enjoyment of art to blind and low-vision visitors. This year’s edition will offer collectors the opportunity to acquire the unique Imperial and Salmanazar large formats of Ornellaia 2019 “Il Vigore” – not only stunning bottles of wine, but also beautiful, unique works of contemporary art and sculpture.

The unique sculptures and bottle designs for this edition have been created by Swedish artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, who chose the title “Il Vigore”. Based on the theme of metamorphosis, their artworks represent the vigour of the natural world, the energy of plant growth and the flourishing cyclical conditions of nature that transforms itself, giving life to wines of great finesse and aromatic richness, like Ornellaia 2019. A powerful, mysterious and intriguing wine, both full-bodied and vibrant in the mouth, it does not reveal all its facets at first taste, offering a new perspective with every sip and sparking curiosity, entertaining the palate with the challenge of grasping all of its different nuances with every new taste.

Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista 2019 | Il Vigore | Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg will open for online bidding on Wednesday 5th October, and the lots will begin closing sequentially, at 1-minute intervals, in the online auction from 2pm BST on Wednesday 19th October.

These unique large format bottles will find homes in new cellars worldwide, and will always remind their owners of the joys of bringing wine, art and friends together. We invite you to participate in this auction and contribute to broadening access to the arts for those who are blind or have low vision. Art has the power of connecting people, this essential power has never been more clear than in the unprecedented times through which we have recently been living, so it is very important these cultural institutions continue to receive our support and commitment.
