When Newell Convers Wyeth’s first cover was published by the Saturday Evening Post in 1903, he was quickly embraced as the heir apparent to the master of the Golden Age of Illustration, Howard Pyle. In short order he developed a separate body of work as a fine artist, in addition to his ongoing career as America’s most celebrated illustrator. He nurtured a family of artists—not least his son Andrew, who achieved fame at a young age with Christina’s World (1948). Despite N.C.’s extraordinary achievements, he felt that the most important aspect of his work was overshadowed—first by his own success as an illustrator, and then by the success of his children. Both market and criticism have embraced illustration in recent years, and history has vindicated N. C. Wyeth’s own view of his work. The core of his unified oeuvre is an extraordinary talent for visual expression coupled with a genius for narrative that has few peers in all of art history. NC Wyeth: Storyteller embraces this unified perspective on his work, presenting a dozen canvases both in and out of illustration. Every canvas tells a story, and we present N. C. Wyeth in his own pictures.
