Morita Shiryu: Bokujin pays respect to a pioneering postwar Japanese artist who revolutionized Far Eastern calligraphy into a global avant-garde aesthetic. Leader of the influential Bokujin-Kai (‘Ink Human Society’), established two years before the formation of Gutai, Morita collaborated with Isamu Noguchi and Franz Kline and also exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Sao Paolo Biennale as early as the 1950s and 1960s. Sotheby’s is honoured to host the world’s first dedicated Morita Shiryu auction with nineteen works by this pivotal artist, introducing collectors to his iconic calligraphic aesthetic.
