Sale L20140

20 – 30 July 2020 | London | full auction details

Sotheby’s July sale of Modern & Post-War British Art is led by a group of drawings and watercolours by David Hockney from the Estate of David Graves, illuminating the close friendship between Hockney and David and Ann Graves. Lifelong friends, Ann was a model for Hockney from the early 1960s and David worked as his assistant for many years. A further group of works on paper from an American private collection showcases the best of early Modern British, with examples by Paul Nash, including a war-time sketch, Wyndham Lewis and Edward Burra. A selection of important paintings by Alan Davie and works by Donald Hamilton Fraser will be offered from the Hirchhorn Museum, Washington D.C.

The best of British Modernism is represented with paintings and works on paper by Ben Nicholson and sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Representative of the breadth of the sale, there are further highlights across the sale by artists such as Walter Sickert, LS Lowry, Victor Pasmore, William Scott, Elisabeth Frink, Kenneth Armitage and Bridget Riley.
