I do not want to make a painting; I want to open up space.

The founder of Spatialism, Fontana is a defining figure in postwar Italian abstraction. Puncturing and slashing clay, canvas and metal, he succeeded in creating art that transcended the boundaries of painting and sculpture to instead become ‘spatial concepts’, famously stating ‘We live in the mechanical age. Painted canvas and upright plaster no longer have any reason to exist’.

Accompanying Fontana’s works are compelling photographs by Ugo Mulas, who captured Fontana in the action of creating his dramatic slashes and cuts, as well as the artist’s studio. In a striking pairing, the exhibition unites Fontana’s bold red canvas, Spatial Concept, The Sun, with a series of photographs by Mulas capturing the process of its creation.
