Lidia Patelli’s photographs are imbued with a sense of the uncanny. Ranging from stark silhouettes in black and white to disconcerting images of animals, she continually keeps the viewer guessing. Her subjects, often statues or stuffed animals, are lifelike but inanimate—frozen in time as well as in her images. Surrounded by elegant period frames, Patelli’s works are modern but also summon a nineteenth-century aesthetic. Our exhibition explores the inherent ambiguity in her work, these ‘misleading impressions’.

Patelli was born in Lugano, Switzerland, and studied at the CSIA (the Educational Centre for Industrial Arts) and the S.S.A.A. (the Institute of Applied Arts). She has lived in Bergamo since 2005, and specialises in photographing ancient and modern works of art.
