The gallery presents a selection of works from each of the 40 artists featured in Edward Horswell’s latest book, Sculpture of Les Animaliers 1900-1950, published in October 2019 by Scala Arts and Heritage Publishers. Around 100 sculptures illustrated in the book are now on display in the exhibition, many of which are for sale.

The first half of the twentieth century marked the heyday of animal sculpture throughout Europe. This book examines impressionist modellers such as Bugatti and Degas, alongside Pompon and Sandoz amongst others, who as carvers produced sculpture with smoother planes and sleeker lines. With the advent of the camera, realism became less important, which, coupled with the rapid modernisation taking influenced sculpture of the period. Today, the natural world is under threat just 100 years after artists were exposed to the ‘wild’ for the first time. This exhibition and book celebrate the diversity of nature, valued by sculptors for its intrinsic beauty, both then and now.

Edward Horswell’s book is a companion volume to his mother Jane’s (the founder of the Sladmore Gallery) pioneering publication from almost 50 years ago, entitled Bronze Sculpture of Les Animaliers, which covered the period from 1850 to 1900.
