In these works on paper from the end of the 20th century, the expressive power of the great painter that was Karel Appel (1921-2006) was still clearly visible. In the three paintings from 1999, we find the intense energy of the olive stumps painted by the artist in the 1960s. The edges of the composition are irregular, as if they had been compressed. The three paintings from 2000 are more airy, almost floral, using the grid effects that structured his compositions at the end the 1970s. The large work in Indian ink from 1995 oscillates between figuration and disfigurement: we see a silhouette emerge then melt away, wandering, if not descending a staircase…
