Impressionist and Modern Art Sothebys New York

Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale features a stunning selection of paintings, works on paper and sculpture by leading artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From an energetic Impressionist floral composition by Claude Monet to a painterly canvas showcasing Vlaminck’s famed Fauve period to Joan Miró’s monumental pastel Figure, the November 12th auction promises to be among the strongest and boldest in recent history. René Magritte’s painting of Edward James, the famed Surrealist collector, provides one the most important Surrealist portraits to appear at auction in decades and will be feature alongside newly discovered works by Renoir, Morandi and Rembrandt Bugatti.

In honor of the centenary of the Armistice of the First World War, the sale will be led by a curated section entitled The Beautiful and Damned: Radical Art of the Great War. The offering will assemble masterpieces that capture the period from immediately prior to the outbreak of the war through to its aftermath, together telling the artistic history of that momentous period. Dramatic highlights include a daring masterpiece, Pre-War Pageant from the American artist Marsden Hartley’s Berlin production and its vivacious companion Ludwig Meidner’s Apokalyptische Landschaft, a rare 1912 example of the artist’s most important subject.
