Sotheby’s Important Design sale presents a curated survey of Design from the last century, from notable examples of Tiffany Studios and American Arts & Crafts to outstanding pieces of Post-War and Contemporary Design. The auction is anchored by masterworks of mid-century and postwar decorative arts, which include a newly discovered and important table by Isamu Noguchi. This exceptionally rare piece, executed between 1945-1947, is among only three examples of the form hand-carved by the artist that are known to exist. Additional highlights from the period include a unique “Sculpture-Front” Cabinet by Paul Evans, two important “Dandelions” by Harry Bertoia as well as superlative designs by George Nakashima, Jean Prouvé, Gio Ponti and Pierre Jeanneret. An exceptional selection of sculptures and functional pieces by Les Lalanne constitutes another focal point of the sale, which is led by an important “Crocodile” Settee from the historical collection of Claude and François-Xavier. Two Moutons de Laine from the Collection of Kay Unger, an exceptional and unique “Structure Végétale” Chandelier and two exceptional “Ginkgo” dining suites in bronze and aluminum further distinguish this chapter. In addition to superb pieces from the Lalannes’ floral and animalier world, the auction also features important works by Tiffany Studios and American Pre-War Design, which include a rare Tiffany “Fruit” Table Lamp, a magnificent “River of Life” Window and a selection of superb Frank Lloyd Wright doors, windows and furniture. European postwar design is represented through masterworks by Carlo Bugatti, Alberto Giacometti, Eugène Printz and Jean-Michel Frank, in a chapter highlighted by an extremely rare Vanity Set by Josef Hoffmann.
