Carl Kostyál presents New York-based South Korean artist HyeGyeong Choi’s ‘Food Coma’, her debut exhibition with the gallery, after featuring in the group show ‘Through a Glass Darkly’ at Carl Kostyál Milan last summer.
For her first solo show in Europe, Choi presents a new body of work in which she delves into fantasies of bounty and indulgence to explore and question body image, gender and sexuality. Bucolic other-wordly landscapes realised in wild neon palettes are peopled with joyously gluttonous figures devouring chicken thighs and long strands of spaghetti. Her voluptuous female figures luxuriate in their bodies not to satisfy the spectator but for their own pleasure. Choi’s fluid visual language is underpinned by a technical rigour developed through years of incessant training and experimentation. At times there are direct references to art history, but although nods to Flemish still lives of burgeoning game lurk in the background, most often the scenes are products of Choi’s own boundless imagination.
