Hayley Youngs creates lavishly colorful paintings, alluding to a realm beyond the physical world, both philosophically and spiritually. Employing a visual language of esoteric shapes and curvilinear motifs, she navigates a mystical pictorial space, governed by symmetry, color and intuitive precision as well as the inclusion of constructed landscapes and fragments of nature from memories of her travels. With a mission to find serenity amidst a wildly turbulent sociopolitical climate, Youngs’ ongoing series of recent works metaphorize humanity’s journey into the unknown and the societal transformation taking shape in our modern historical moment.
Drawing stylistic influence from, Fauvism, Psychedelia, Surrealism & Visionary art traditions, Youngs’ recent paintings are a timely reflection of the universal desire to dream, find balance and beauty, and serve as a safe haven for comfort, collective meditation, introspection, and re-orientation.
Serenity Now, a collection of recent richly colorful acrylic paintings on canvas by Hayley Youngs is an exploration of worlds, natural and imagined. These transportive images invite you to “find the calm within the chaos.” Youngs, who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and holds a BFA from the Pratt Institute, found the inspiration for the title Serenity Now in an episode from the NBC sitcom, “Seinfeld.” In the episode, the character known as Frank Costanza, played by the late Jerry Stiller, is advised by his doctor based on a self-help relaxation tape to say “serenity now” every time he gets angry in order to reduce his stress and keep his blood pressure down.
