Through the act of shaking hands, we are capable of producing rhythmic and repetitive sounds evoking new signs and alphabetic horizons. The rattle’s sound marks the beginning of ceremonies or encounters: It is an answer to inhabit a new, raw, elemental and potential space.
At the intersection of mark and sound, From The Rattle celebrates this ‘handshake’ between Toma and Beattie by investigating the dialogue of space and form generated by this encounter.
The new work created for this exhibition opens up a conversation between forms inhabiting the gallery; proposing intimate ways to answer to this atavic rhythm and research the kind of worlds we could or should inhabit.
The strong physicality of marks in both artists’ work addresses a desire for building new localities and means of presence; ecological, technological realities populated by human-non-human interactions.
In order to achieve a balance between the abstract, hypnotic, intimate, imagined and real world, the works in this space require the presence of the audience to continue the movement.
This rattle-led journey proposes works that have traveled to distant lands and spaces and brought back the findings in the form of signs, where both Beattie and Toma’s work appear as encounters in this pilgrimage.
From the Rattle is an attempt to reconnect with our inner desire for creation, as a response to a sound, as a source of intellectual exploration.
The works inhabit the gallery, conceived as a sounding board for the rhythm of the rattle, are crafting tangible ways of shaping and repairing the worlds we will be ready to inhabit, they want to inform new meanings and shine new light on our relationship to the world.
A new sacred space is invoked: a space From The Rattle.
