This summer, Sotheby’s is pleased to present Food for Thought, an auction devoted to culinary themed mouthwatering works of fine and decorative arts. Open for bidding from 25 June through 2 July, Food for Thought offers an array of delectable objects across many different mediums and styles, including examples of American Art, Impressionist & Modern Art, and Old Master Paintings, which demonstrate the enduring popularity of the still-life genre throughout art history. Among the highlights is William Michael Harnett’s Fruit and Asparagus, which showcases the American master’s keen attention to highly realistic details, and an exquisitely rendered canvas by Johannes Bouman, Still life of Fruit in a Kraak Bowl, on a Ledge, painted approximately 200 years prior. The sale will also offer an array of culinary Design pieces including a Staffordshire solid-agate pecten-shell teapot and cover from 1750, an Italian purpurin snuff box with a micro-mosaic featuring a young Bacchus, and various silver foodservice pieces.
