S|2 London presents the first UK exhibition of the influential Brazilian artist Flávio de Carvalho. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1899, Flávio de Carvalho was a painter, sculptor, architect, scenographer, designer, journalist, writer and playwright.

Flavio de Carvalho Sothebys S2

A veritable polymath, Carvalho used his many talents and eccentric, irreverent forms of expressions to shock the bourgeoisie. Carvalho made use of new media in his latest works and is considered a precursor to the multimedia artist. He stands out for his theatre and artistic performances, which opened the way to the new artistic procedures that developed in Brazil from the 1960s and 1970s.

As French architect Le Corbusier defined him, Flávio de Carvalho was “a romantic revolutionary.” As a painter, Flávio de Carvalho was acclaimed not only in Brazil but in Western Europe, as well as in the USSR and the US. His renowned expressionistic portraits of personalities are now in many museums, like those of New York, Paris, Rome, Moscow, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Carvalho’s work can be seen as the missing link between the early modernism of artists like Tarsila Amaral and the experimentalism of Neoconcrete names such as Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Clark and Lygia Pape.
