ETERNAL COMPANIONS. A journey through the rites and beliefs of Ancient ChinaThe Barakat Gallery is proud to present an exhibition dedicated to the art of Mingqi, the “spirit objects” buried with the deceased in Chinese tombs to accompany them in the afterlife. Through a selection of artefacts from the Han and Tang dynasties, we will explore the artistic developments and the evolution of religious and philosophic thought in Middle Period China (c. 100 BCE to 900 CE), along with the changing relationship between the world of the living and the one of the dead.
The exhibition will feature extraordinary examples of early Chinese funerary objects, including beautiful animal sculptures, magnificent warrior figures, and a rare pair of large well-preserved Lokapala statues.
