For Bernard Piffaretti’s first exhibition at Lisson Gallery, the artist presents new and recent paintings.
The Paris-based artist creates these paintings using his signature duplication method, in which he has been working for nearly four decades. First dividing a canvas into halves with a central strip of paint, he creates an abstract composition in bold colour on one side, then mimics the creation on the other. This self-plagarism is often so exact, the eye cannot distinguish between which was applied first. In this focus on the process over configuration, Piffaretti challenges our aesthetic and emotional tendencies for problem-solving or resolution, both affirming and restraining the narrative of painting.all images © the gallery and the artist(s)
