Sotheby’s American Art sale on 21 May will present an exceptional group of paintings, sculpture and works on paper. Among the highlights is Edward Hopper’s Shakespeare at Dusk, an evocative depiction of the Central Park Mall at twilight that belongs to the artist’s celebrated series of New York cityscapes. Also included is Maxfield Parrish’s Study for ‘Old King Cole,’ the first of two studies created in preparation for Parrish’s iconic mural located at The St. Regis Hotel off Fifth Avenue on 55th Street in New York.

Additionally, we will be offering a preeminent and widely exhibited group of nineteenth century Hudson River School paintings (All That Is Glorious Around Us: Property from an Important American Collector) that is led by Sanford Robinson Gifford’s A Lake Twilight, a dramatic depiction of the nation’s landscape at the brink of the Civil War.
