Alexis McGrigg: The Labour of Being
For her first show in Almine Rech’s Paris Front Space, American painter Alexis McGrigg continues her exploration of Blackness as an intangible plane, a mode of being, and a transcendent experience.
She utilizes painting, drawing, and interdisciplinary media to explore the multiplicity of Blackness through figurative abstraction and conceptual narratives. In her latest series of paintings created in 2021, Alexis considers Blackness as an invisible medium that exists in space, the Ether — a plane through which black souls travel on a journey into Being.
She examines this space as a place of rest, a meeting place for souls to convene. This body of work is a visual study of the vulnerability of rest and the labor of being.
