"I made a bet almost 40 years ago, that a people who could speak and write so brilliantly and compose music so lyrically, surely must also have painted. I have made it a personal mission to inform the American Irish diaspora about the beauty and the visual tapestry that Irish art has bequeathed the world." - Brian P. Burns
Formed over a lifetime, the Brian P. Burns Collection is one of the greatest collections of Irish art in private hands. Including artists from the 18th century to the present day, it provides an extraordinary insight into Ireland – its history, its people and its artists. Born out of a profound sense of Brian P. Burns’ Irish ancestry and his desire to celebrate and promote the achievements of Ireland’s artists, the collection more than exceeds these aims.
Through Mr Burns’ generous loan of the collection to exhibitions in America and Ireland, the artworks have been enjoyed by visitors in their thousands, creating and inspiring new audiences for Irish art. Sotheby’s are now honoured to present 100 oils, watercolours and sculptures from the collection, including Jack B. Yeats, Roderic O’Conor, John Lavery, William Orpen, Walter Osborne, John Leech, Mary Swanzy, Rowan Gillespie and a host of other names at auction in November 2018, which will bring the rich legacy of Ireland’s artists to light once again and offers collectors an opportunity to write a new chapter for the artworks within it.
