20th Century Art: A Different Perspective showcases modern and contemporary works from Central and Eastern Europe. This season, we are delighted to be offering one of the most important collections of Polish abstract art to ever come on the market from the collection of Anne and William Frej. Carefully assembled over many years, with many works acquired directly from the artists themselves, and with a keen eye for beauty and quality, it offers collectors a remarkable survey of works from the most important Polish artists of the mid to late twentieth century. The sale also includes a collection of Czech modern art and strong offerings of Hungarian paintings and sculptures.

Highlights from the sale include works by Wojciech Fangor, Henryk Stażewski, Edward Krasiński, Ryszard Winiarski, Adam Marczynski, Eugène Zak, Josef Šíma, Jan Zrzavý, Emil Filla, Vilmos Aba-Novák and Sándor Bortnyik.

The sale will be exhibited in London from 5 to 9 November. It will open for bidding on 3 November 2021, and closes on 9 November from 2pm (GMT).

Sotheby’s Brexit Update

Important Update: Private Buyer (UK VAT)

Sotheby’s may now only provide an invoice less applicable VAT where we arrange both the shipment and direct export of purchased lots out of the UK on behalf of a private buyer.

We will be happy to provide a Sotheby’s shipping quotation following a successful purchase upon request, please do contact UKPostSaleServices@sothebys.com should you have specific shipment requirements or any questions relating to your purchase.

Due to a recent update in the United Kingdom’s VAT export refund schemes, set by the UK Government (HM Revenue & Customs), Sotheby’s will no longer be able to offer an invoice less any applicable VAT and/or VAT refunds to private buyers who export their purchased lots out of the UK using their own shipper or who wish to hand carry in person.

Business or Trade Buyers are not affected by this change where the purchase has been made in the business or trading name.

(Sotheby’s will only be able to arrange shipments and exports with Sotheby’s approved shippers. Private buyers who arrange a collection and export directly with a shipper will be charged VAT at the applicable rate and will not be able to claim a VAT refund).
