This Autumn, Sotheby’s Classical Chinese paintings department is pleased to present two important paintings from practising monks of the Ming Dynasty:  Ink Bamboo by Shitao and Melons and Brackens by Bada Shanren. Both depict nature vividly with minimalist technique, demonstrating the skillful use of ink and brush. Calligraphy highlights include a set of three albums of calligraphy by Yun Shouping, which contain letters, inscriptions of paintings and poems.
Furthermore, the sale showcases a set of Manuscripts and a rare draft of an imperial poem by the Qianlong Emperor. Other highlights include a set of ten large frames - Immortal Mountain and Pavilion by Yan Yi; an Album of Bamboo, Tree and Rock and Calligraphy by Zha Shibiao and an Album of Letters by various Ming artists including Huang Daozhou and Shi Kefa. 
The sale also consists of selections from various private collections, including the second part of the Howe Collection, which displays elegant calligraphy pieces from different Guangdong artists; Buddhist paintings and calligraphy of the Song and Yuan dynasties from a private Japanese Collection; Paintings and Calligraphy from an Asian Private Collection, which includes a rare scroll by Chen Chun, completely fresh to the market: Calligraphy in Cursive Script.
