Wilson works with construction timber, plaster, photography, paint and landscape, as well as often improvising with materials to realise ideas. Landscape is used in Wilson’s practice as a medium through which to discuss concerns with experience, access and expectation. For her debut solo installation with JGM Gallery, Wilson presents a body of work that plays with form and function. At first possibly appearing useful but on closer inspection rendered useless by scale or stability. The work’s interrogation of how we negotiate landscape attempts to function as an allegory of our relationship to educational, political and social structures. From functional objects to towering abstract constructions, Wilson moves between concept driven ideas and developing opportunities to make site responsive work.

The Barrier System paintings, placed on the walls are in some ways a formalisation of the by products of her process, developed with material left over from large scale sculptures; colour tests, off-cuts and imagery. Wilson pulls these pieces back together into what is for her the most tangible and formal art object; the painting. The titling ‘Barrier System’ references Wilson’s own educational and social structures, as she is acknowledging her education in painting and her romanticised experience of landscape as a potential barrier to being able to think outside of these terms.

Alice Wilson lives and works in London. She graduated with an MA from Wimbledon School of Art, UAL in 2011 and with a BA Fine Art from Loughborough University in 2005. In 2019 Wilson has installed four significant works at Cheeseburn Sculpture Park for the 2019-20 programme, is exhibiting with DOMOBAAL as part of the group exhibition Backyard Sculpture and has installed her largest work to date at Thames Side Studios Gallery for the group exhibition Modern Finance. In addition to her forthcoming solo exhibition with JGM Gallery she is also exhibiting two works related to ISLAND in her exhibition Gated Community at Glass Cloud Gallery in North London. Completing a residency in Aarhus, Denmark during May 2018 supported by the British Council’s Artists’ International Development Fund, Wilson returned to Aarhus in October for a significant Solo Exhibition, Goat Moth at Godsbanen. Other recent exhibitions include HarderEdge at the Saatchi Gallery, London, Dec 2018, Painting and Other Bad Habits at Charlotte Fogh Gallery, Aarhus, Nov 2018, a Solo Exhibition with DOLPH projects, London, Sept 2017, and Recreational Grounds, a public intervention in a disused South London car park, April 2018
