“Howard’s paintings explore the fragility of the human condition and the complexity of the emotional spectrum”

The work of Rachel Howard navigates the space between the abstract and the figurative, with paintings that explore the fragility of the human condition and the complexity of the emotional spectrum. Howard asks us to consider how memory can fix on banal imagery as a reference point for a dramatic or traumatic occurrences such as war. She questions what lies beyond the surface, beyond the fissures that so often open up in an otherwise unbroken layering of paint.

To coincide with the opening of Der Kuss, Blain|Southern has published a new monograph on Rachel Howard. The book details recent bodies of work and offers a comprehensive overview of artworks going back to 2013, with museum installations images and reference images from the artist’s archive, alongside texts by Darian Leader, Craig Burnett and poet Kate Dent.
